Important things to know about building bluebird nest boxes:
Cut about 1/2 inch off each corner of the floor to provide drainage. Position the floor 1/4 inch up from the bottom of the nest box. (Recessing the floor helps keep the box dry.) Attach the floor with 2-inch finishing nails on the front, back and right side. Do not use nails through the “hinged” left side or you won’t be able to open it. Starting about 1/2 inch below the entrance hole, make three shallow cuts about 1/4 inch apart on both sides of the front board.
The whole point of this is to provide nest boxes for beneficial birds. Table 1 shows the recommended nest box sizes for three sizes of nest boxesand for five species of birds that commonly use nest boxes. Many bird house plans are species specific and forgood reason.

If the box is too small, the birds will not use it or it may become so crowdedas the young grow. You can also use gourds that are hung together instead of building a house. Wrens will use holes that are smaller than 1 1/8" in diameter. It is also important to make the appropriate size hole because it will excludecertain undesirable species.

White pine is a good choice because it is easy to obtain. I’m going to drill just about as deep to the first head of the nail. Doing so will allow my nail to easily slip into the hole, and lock the door. The Front is a shorter width, so must have some material removed using a rip saw. And the Floor of the birdhouse has a shorter width, and needs a 1/2″ chamfer on the corners. This Bluebird House can be made in an afternoon with simple hand tools.

The box also incorporates a double thickness roof which helps provide better heat retention and insulation from summer sun.
